Gryfe’s is hands down the best bagel place in Toronto. If you’re looking for fluffy, soft, absolutely incredible bagels, you have to come here. The bagels are perfect every time, and they have an amazing selection of sides to go with them.
They also carry gluten-free bagels, which are made separately to avoid cross-contamination—and they’re honestly some of the best gluten-free bagels I’ve ever had. Whether you’re gluten-free or not, this place is a must-try if you love truly amazing bagels.
I made a 50 min trip from downtown to try some bagels here. I’m from NY and I’ve heard Canada also makes great bagels, so I wanted to compare. Is Gryfe’s worth the long subway trip? Yes! I got the Loxurious sandwich with Everything bagel. Smaller than NY bagels, but I have never had a bagel that is crispy on the outside and soft in the inside?? What?? That was a first for me. I also got the cinnamon sugar bagel which might as well have been dessert bread and challah which was also delicious. Service was really nice and helpful. The ambience and neighborhood are the parts that were not worth the trip. There really wasn’t anything else around that I found interesting. So if you have a car, a quick ride to Gryfe’s is worth the stop. If you’re taking the subway like me, hope you have an open mind to experience some unique bagels.
I hadn’t been to Gryfe’s Bagels in about twenty years and stopped in today — it’s just as good as I remember! The staff were all really friendly and welcoming. The bagels themselves are amazing: super soft, very fresh, and the smears are delicious. These aren’t Montreal or New York style bagels — they’re their own thing: lighter, softer, and honestly addictive.
I brought some home and made my daughter a bagel, and she immediately asked for a second one, which says everything! I would probably pass on the scrambled egg sandwiches next time — they use an egg patty was a little “meh” — but the bagels are the real star here. OMG, so good. Definitely would go back again!
This place is extremely overrated in every way. I went in, and there was maybe 3-4 people in front of me, and all I ordered was a lox and cream cheese sandwich. It was very slow to get served, and then once I reached the cashier, they clearly forgot my order, and I had to ask for it twice and they went to find it on the other side of the store.
The first time I asked, the cashier just rudely blanked me. Unbelievable. Not even a "one sec" . She should be fired immediately.
As for the lox and cream cheese bagel, it was a tiny sandwich with a slice of lox and a bit of creamcheese. I had to open it to see the "vegetables" .
For your own sake, please don't believe any reviews saying portions are generous.
The only thing generous about Gryfes is how management lets their employees run around wasting time and making customers wait.
And finally, the bagel wasn't even that good - basically it was like a somewhat chewier bun. Abe's bagels, Bagel House and many others are just as good if not better. I guess hype really works - got me to go out of my way to waste money here today.
Please, please save yourself the aggravation and stay far far away from this dump.
My daughter had a author come to her school to read a book called the bagel king, and then gave her a free bagel coupon with a bagel. She then insisted that we go there every time for bagels, so I tried it and it was better than I ever had before. Definitely recommend the salt bagel!
Customer service Issue :I usually love coming here for bagels, the staff are always polite and very nice. It’s a part of my community that I really enjoy. However, my experience today was very disappointing.
There was a new staff member, a woman with short curly hair wearing a floral dress, who was extremely rude. She asked me several times how many bagels I wanted. I answered clearly (four), but she kept repeating the question with attitude. Finally, she said in a rude tone, “I just need to know what bag to use.” I have never been spoken to like this here before. Not everyone orders by the dozen, just wanted four.
When I decided to add one more (making five), she repeated “five?” with a rude expression. I also noticed her being dismissive with other customers as well.
This is not the welcoming service I’m used to at your store, and I hope it can be addressed, as it really changes the experience of coming in.
If I had to describe a Toronto bagel, it would be this.
Going into this location on a rainy September morning, I was welcomed to a soft clean bakery. The person at the desk was helpful and accomodating. I got a Loxurious on an everything bagel and man, that was perfect. It was soft, pillowy with a slight bite from the crust. Even the cream cheese was pillowy and uniform, no dried out spots or uneven spots. The veggies were crisp and added no moisture, like who needs a wet bagel??
I wish there was something dill related, for some complementary flavors but I respect what they're doing. Will definitely pick up something if I'm ever in the area.
Bagels are great. Highly advise to go earlier , before 2pm as they sell out, and thats it for the day. Something that needs to be addressed is the lack of customer service.. especially after you pay. The last 3 times I paid via debit card, & the machine asks for a tip.. the cashiers look at you with disgust after giving little or no tip.. bro it's takeout and you bag bagels 🥯 smile more
Super friendly service and amazing bagels. Came in with a big group on a bagel crawl and was treated to bags of bagels by the lovely owner and staff.
You can also find them now at Fiesta Farms (2 for $3)! I got some still warm bagels early afternoon on a Saturday.
Large black ant stuck in the underside of the bagel. Horrifying. Wish I took a pic but was too disgusted and put it in the garbage immediately. Thank god it was whole wheat and not something like an everything bagel where it might’ve blended in…
This used to be our go-to spot for bagels. We have been visiting weekly in past many years. But in recent months, we’ve noticed a clear change. The bagels just aren’t what they used to be — the texture, taste, and freshness feel different. It is very sad to see this happening.
Not sure if the recipe or baking process has changed, we really hope the owner sees this and brings back what made them so good.
Gone downhill. Screw reviews about service, I don’t care if the service is bad, that is not the issue. These bagels are undercooked and poor at best. The fam would roll over in their graves if they tasted these. 36 years and iv’e never noticed a change in the perfect Toronto bagel taste and chew. Until now. Shame. Hire some people who care or sell it off, THIS IS A MOCK OF THE NAME.
Also i'm asian so don’t step there. Bad bagel police coming through.
Their is a real attitude lately. As well keep raising there prices and now they have priced there pizza’s out of sight on price. There feeling is there the only bagel place in Toronto. After over 40 years of going there im done with Gryfes. What a shame. All price driven and the friendly Gryfes is gone.they hire inexperienced staff and my last two orders were wrong. Terrible attitude
