Barberian's Steak House

One of North America's premiere steak and seafood houses. Many of our guests comment of how the warmth and friendliness of Barberian's recalls an earlier era. This impression is complimented by the antiques, paintings and artifacts that we proudly display throughout our restaurant.

Some traditions haven't changed either, like the plate of pickled vegetables that lands on the table before the water is even poured. Alongside the expected dill pickles are snap peas, celery, fennel, carrots, and onions. It's a refreshing way to start the meal and a welcome palate cleanser between bites once the meat sweats inevitably kick in.

Even the Caesar salad ($27; half order pictured after being split) has evolved, now topped with a thick strip of tender, beautifully caramelized bacon. The dressing packs plenty of flavour: lots of garlic, a subtle anchovy umami, a touch of sweetness that may come from sherry, and a zingy finish that tastes like a generous helping of horseradish. Even split between two people, it's still an impressively hearty starter.

The dry-aged bone-in rib steak ($108 for 16oz) remains Barberian's signature dish and was fantastic as always. Charcoal grilling lends it a subtle smokiness, while the beautifully caramelized crust gives way to a perfectly medium-rare centre. Their signature seasoning adds plenty of flavour without becoming overly salty. Compared to previous visits, the bone seemed slightly smaller, but the beef itself was every bit as flavourful and wonderfully tender.

Still, it was the roast prime rib of beef ($96) that had my eyes popping. The towering, nearly two-inch-thick slice made me wonder whether I'd accidentally been served a double portion. There's no choice of doneness with the prime rib, and mine was a touch rarer than I normally prefer, but it remained incredibly tender. The intensely seasoned crust was delicious enough to break off and enjoy with each bite. I actually preferred pairing it with a smear of horseradish and some of that seasoning over the accompanying red wine demi-glace, which leaned a little too sweet for my taste. Give me a simple au jus any day.

As if the portion weren't generous enough, the prime rib also comes with the rib bone, a satisfyingly meaty beef bone, and a massive Yorkshire pudding that's wonderfully airy with an incredibly crisp exterior. Every steak also includes your choice of French fries or a baked potato. We both opted for the latter: a fist-sized fluffy potato finished tableside with your choice of sour cream, bacon bits, and feta. While the sour cream is a classic topping, the feta adds a creamy saltiness that works surprisingly well.

Needless to say, you'll leave stuffed. In our case, we packed up enough prime rib to make sandwiches for two the following evening. Fortunately, I had wisely saved room for dessert. The New York style cheesecake ($22.50) was beautifully balanced: rich without being heavy, dense yet silky smooth, with a thin crust that added just enough savoury contrast. The fresh strawberry sauce complemented the cheesecake perfectly without overwhelming it with sweetness. Blueberry and chocolate are also available if you prefer.

Disappointing experience, especially considering the prices. There are many places in the city offering much better food for a fraction of the cost.

We ordered the steak tartare, New York ribeye, burger, onion rings, and Brussels sprouts. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and had a good texture, but nothing about it justified the price. The onion rings were greasy and doughy. The steak tartare was also underwhelming, and the crackers served with it were extremely hard and tasted like cardboard.

The burger was probably the best value for the price and was genuinely tasty. The Brussels sprouts, however, were burnt, and the béarnaise sauce tasted more like béchamel.

We ordered garlic butter, which never arrived, yet we were still charged for it. Our complimentary pickles were also taken away while we were still eating them, without anyone asking. The servers were also quite rude throughout the experience.

The atmosphere was nice, but the food and service simply did not justify the prices. I would not return.

First time at Barberian’s for a celebration dinner with my wife. Did not disappoint; the wine selection was vast and diverse. The service was prompt and extremely pleasant. Glad I made a reservation, as the line was out the door on our way out. And I can see why, the food will not disappoint. A baked potato so classic it felt rich going down. Enough steak choices to make you question reality. Can’t wait to come back. Thank you to all!

What a meal. The bone-in filet mignon was absolute perfection, beautifully cooked, incredibly tender, and exactly what you hope for when ordering a great steak.

The crispy, spicy Brussels sprouts had no business being that good. Seriously, when Brussels sprouts become something you’re fighting over at the table, the kitchen is doing something right. The shrimp cocktail was outstanding too fresh, delicious, and a perfect start to the meal.

And then there’s CJ. What a fantastic waiter. Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and just genuinely great at what he does. He took an already excellent dinner and made the whole experience even better.

Food: 5/5.
Service: 5/5.
CJ: 6/5.

We’ll absolutely be back.

Worth every penny! Pete, our host gave us a truly memorable evening. The food was superb ( pleased we skipped the starter because the portions are LARGE). The steak was cooked to perfection and we were treated to some fantastic stories of Rush visits and photos. The atmosphere was buzzing and wish we can visit again. Thank you to the whole team !

Barberian’s is one of those classic Toronto restaurants that absolutely lives up to its reputation. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the history. The vintage décor, old world charm, and intimate dining rooms create an atmosphere that’s difficult to find anywhere else in the city.

The food was outstanding. The steak was cooked perfectly with a beautiful crust while remaining incredibly tender and juicy. The baked potato was exactly what you’d expect from a traditional steakhouse, and the house pickles were a great touch that complemented the meal perfectly. Every bite reminded us why Barberian’s has been a Toronto institution for decades.

What really stood out was the consistency. There are plenty of modern steakhouses with flashy interiors, but Barberian’s focuses on doing the fundamentals exceptionally well. It feels timeless rather than trendy.

If you’re looking for an authentic, classic steakhouse experience with outstanding food, warm service, and an atmosphere full of character and history, Barberian’s is absolutely worth visiting. We’ll definitely be back.

This is an old school steak house, you're coming for the top quality meat. If you're a trend chaser or looking for any new meat craze, this isn't the place for you. Handsome, brisk, and efficient waiters. A steak will run you about $100 CAD. I got the filet mignon wrapped in bacon, absolutely delicious and cut through it like butter. Cooked to perfection. All steaks come with choice of fries or a chunky baked potato with topping selection done tableside. Opt for the baked potatoes. Come hungry.

Massive wine bottle selection and sommelier on hand but the by the glass menu is a bit small. Good dessert selection, I hear the cheesecake is the best but the sundae I had was also great. They have a nice digestif/aperitif menu too. Given the old school vibe, I think a couple more Amaro options would fit perfect here. 10/10 hope to come back again!

There are plenty of flashy new spots in this city, but when I want a steak done right, I come back to Barberian's. It’s been a staple for decades for a reason. The atmosphere hasn't succumbed to any passing trends - it’s classic, wood-paneled & professional. I had the ribeye medium-rare last night, and it was exceptional, paired with a cellar selection that is arguably the best in the country. The staff here are career professionals; they understand the tempo of a business dinner and the value of discretion. It’s an investment in quality that never fails to deliver. If you value consistency over hype, this is where you book your table. Still the gold standard in Toronto.

First off the staff were friendly and somewhat attentive but could do better.

The long and short of our dining experience was we will never return and suggest that this steak house should be avoided.

$27.00 for a run of the mill Caesar salad you have to be kidding, maybe $6.00 for this small portion with rock hard croutons, not a robust salad dressing topped with 2 slabs of bacon.

Asked for my Centre Cut Top Sirloin to be medium rare and it was rare with bits that were not chewable.

The BBQ Baby Back Ribs were atrocious, the meat was hard what little there was and a total waste of money. I question whether they were actually baby back ribs.

With the baked potato you were offered sour cream and what turned out to be rock hard bacon bits, not enjoyable to say the least.

We were offered the dessert menu which would have cost approximately $100.00 and we passed as we didn’t want to see how they would mess up their offerings.

I couldn’t get out of there fast enough as on top of the poor food it was maddening that this birthday dinner was totally wrecked.

I went to the place for the first time. It was a little bit hard to find because it doesn't look like a steak house on the outside. Actually, it looked more like a local pub. But once you go in, it was a very cozy and packed steak house. Once we got in, we checked our coats and was led to our table right away.

Service here wasn't the best. No one really smiling. It felt a lot like Peter Lugers in NYC where the service wanted to get a lot of your orders done quickly without much small talk.

The food was pretty good. The onion rings was disappointing. The dough was very soggy so it was not that good. The Brussel sprouts were very salty, but the actual steak was the star. Cooked perfectly and paired with the horseradish, it was the perfect blend.

The dessert was cute and delicious. I would definitely recommend it if you still have room after the steaks.

Overall, would definitely repeat.

We had an incredible time at Barberian’s. Our server CJ was fantastic. Knowledgeable, friendly and hospitable. He recommended some fantastic cuts of beef along with some delicious sides that paired perfectly.
The lamb and the bone in filet were perfectly cooked, seasoned and served.
The onion rings and fries are a fantastic addition. My favourite were the Brussels sprouts though. They are a definite must try.

Barberian’s Steakhouse remains a premier Toronto destination for a classic, high-end dining experience. Our party of four enjoyed an exceptional meal starting with the rich, crusty French onion soup and fresh steak tartare. The dry-aged porterhouse was perfectly seared and served with crisp fries, while the New York-style cheesecake with strawberry preserves provided a decadent finish. Between the top-tier service and the historic atmosphere filled with original Canadian art, it was a fantastic evening from start to finish.
