PHIPPS BAKERY CAFE
...Where Dessert Comes First
This is a charming bakery cafe, that's definitely worth a visit if you like sweet treats. It has a great selection of freshly baked, cookies, cakes, pastries and cakes for special occasions. They also sell cookie dough which is really good.
The cakes are carefully packaged and boxed for travel.
Nice bakery with freshly baked breads, pastries, cakes etc. There is usually a queue to follow if you're buying something.
Many of the items are not price marked.
Service was okay, I wanted to look around a bit and check prices but they asked me to get into line without even seeing what I wanted to ask. I didn't want to hold up a line trying to choose which is why I was looking around.
There are many regulars at the store. They even sell additional products like cards, small gift items, paper napkins etc. Overall products are good and it's worth a visit for sure.
This bakery has some good items (bagels), however after having tried their samosas, bagels, spanakopita and pastries, I find that they savory food lacks flavour and was stale/dry. The sweeter items did not leave me craving to come back. 3 stars because service is quick and prices are reasonable. Not excited about going back though..
Jeez....it happens. They work hard, and maybe sometimes mistakes happen, nobody is infallible but generally I've never had a singular issue with Phipps and they're a neighborhood bastion been there forever. The less ppl like Tammy come around, the more pie, cake, pastry they're going to have for me when I come through, so I definitely think Tammy is doing god's work in making sure to spread the news lmfao. Phipps gets enough neighborhood business that they're always running out of stuff, I think that's evidence enough that they're running a great business and will never be going "broke"
This is a bakery that has added a few tables at back and a lunch time selection of some salads and pasta dishes. The baking is excellent and the limited food items are fresh and well prepared. We took some bow tie pasta home and it was very good. Coffee Tea etc nice friendly service. Very much a neighbourhood type place with lots of regular customers. If you are in the area its a much better place for a coffee and pastry or a light lunch than the starbucks on the corner.
Every single time, with out fail, when I am in Toronto I make my way to mid-town to visit Phipps Bakery.
My absolute favourite bakery, just being inside the shop is an experience. I love that you can see the bakers baking goodies in the front window, it smells heavenly. The front dessert display feels reminiscent of a Parisian bakery from a child's storybook.
When you wander into the back of the shop it becomes the quaintest cafe where the walls are covered in murals and you almost feel like you're on an indoor patio. The salad bar is literally the best I have ever had, its so well thought out. It's not like when you go to Loblaws and it feels like every salad is seasoned the same. Every dish has a unique flavour!
The lentil stew always knocks my socks off, the daily quiche is magical, and the mac n cheese is not just for kids. I also would like to propose marriage to the falafel.
I think it's really cool that Phipps is vegetarian without FEELING vegetarian, like... it doesnt feel devoid of something. Its comfort food, sans meat.
By way of desserts, I recommend e v e r y t h i n g - but specifically for small treats, the Walnut Thumprint Cookie is so buttery and rich and the raspberry jam in the centre is sweet and tart. I also always have to pick up chocolate pecan buttertarts, (I love the mixed packs of mini buttertarts) lemon shortbread slices, and chocolate chip cookies.. I swoon over them, and they're especially good dipped into coffee.
My go to cakes are either the apple divine cake (OMG) or the mom's chocolate. For my own birthday I got the marble galaxy and there was not a crumb left.
I will end this by saying, that if you walk in there, and you just can't decide, buy yourself the CHEESECAKE BROWNIE. It only comes in pans, not individual, but that's ok because the trick is to stick it in your freezer and have a bite a day to keep yourself happy #portioncontrol
