Sunnys Chinese
Our party of 4 went there for a special occasion on a Thursday night. in fact some of us had been there before with mixed opinions but felt another visit was warranted. If you didn't know it was a Chinese restaurant you wouldn't know it by the decor. Not necessarily a negative. The dishes we ordered were for the most part quite tasty, but for the prices charged, the food and small portions were a letdown. The service was slow and inattentive.
I seems that so many of these celebrity type restaurants are closing down. Why?? That's the big question. With some restaurants "celebrity" seems to go to the chefs' heads. The prices are too high for what you get. The trendiness wears off. They close down and open elsewhere with a different theme...that repeats itself. In fact, look up some of Toronto's noted chefs and the various restaurants they have opened and closed.
As for Sunnys Chinese....Chinese food is some of the least expensive to prepare in terms of cost of ingredients and the time to prepare each dish, yet Sunnys seems to think otherwise. Yes, upcharge from what a Swatows would charge, but the price and portions at Sunnys are not in line.
Even though it has a Bib Gourmand recognition as a restaurant with good food at moderate prices, I don't think Michelin meant small streetfood portions at moderate prices.
As with other such restaurants, the trendiness will pass as its customer base seeks something else, and it may not have enough oompf to continue.
My absolute favorite restaurant in Toronto. Ive been around 10 times in the past few years, and I am always amazed at how consistent and creative the food is. Beyond classics like the dan dan noodles and orange chicken, there is always something new and exciting on the menu! But the best thing on the menu by far is the black sesame toast and their soft serve, which is a must get every time. The vibe of the restaurant is also unmatched and perfect for a date night or celebration, and the service is also wonderful. Highly recommend and I LOVE Sunnys!!!

Recently visited Sunny’s Chinese, and finding the place felt a bit like solving a mystery. The restaurant is located all the way down a hallway, and the sign is literally just a piece of cardboard, so it almost feels like you’re not supposed to find it — but that’s part of the charm.
There were only two of us, but we ended up ordering quite a lot because we wanted to try different dishes. In total, we ordered four dishes, a dandan noodle, a bowl of rice, and two drinks. The table is quite small, so once all the food arrived it became very crowded.
We ordered dandan noodles, pork belly, squid, mapo tofu, and black pepper beef. Overall, the food tasted good and the flavors were solid.
I would especially recommend the dandan noodle, the pork belly (if you like the fattier parts of the meat), and the black pepper beef. These dishes stood out the most to me and were definitely the highlights of the meal. Overall, it would be a pretty good Chinese restaurant to check out if you want to try Chinese food.

This place is amazing!! We had a fantastic dinner at the kitchen counter. If we weren’t out of towners, we’d want to be regulars. The dishes we had were top notch: winter greens, silver needle noodles (great comfort food on a cold evening), chargrilled cabbage (hot and spicy and complex) and the black cod, which stole the show for at least one of us—that is, until dessert! Their famous French toast cannot be skipped but it must be ordered together with the soft serve ice cream for the simple reason that the mashup is divine. The staff were kind and attentive but never intrusive. The recommendation of the blood orange rosé was spot on. Perfectly matched with our order. The ambiance was cool and cozy, if perhaps a touch loud. All told, this was a phenomenal dining experience, recommend 100%.
i CANNOT PRAISE SUNNYS CHINESE ENOUGH. the food? INCREDIBLE, 5 STARS. the ambiance and interior? SO classy yet vibey and chill, 5 STARS. the service? A BAJILLION THOUSAND MILLION STARS — i have never felt so comfortable and happy and cared for 🙃 the servers were super friendly, personal, and well-versed with everything on the menu; the amuse bouche for solo diners seems like a small detail but made me feel so special; and my server even offered me hot water/tea after my meal to digest 🙂🙃🙂🙃
the black sesame french toast and soft serve combination was LETHAL, probably one of the best desserts i’ve EVER had. not only were the edges super crunchy but OH MY GOD THE WARM LAYERS of gooey, rich black sesame jam — infused with an indulgent sweetness from the oolong and soaked condensed milk — were actually divine. i was torn between wanting to scarf down the entire thing in 10 seconds while it was warm , but also wanting to savour every. single. bite. of this heavenly dessert. the french toast was impeccable on its own, but the soft serve was also phenomenal and added an entirely new dimension. it was so smooth and so creamy, and the jasmine flavour was so unique and refreshing — i could actually feel like a coolness / breeze linger in my throat after eating it !?!?!? it was such a great contrast to the decadent layers of black sesame jam.
the dan dan noodles were INCREDIBLE . the consistency was ridiculously creamy and saucy — almost buttery — and the oil coated the perfectly cooked, soft noodle immaculately. it was steaming, spicy, and hot (like numbingly so), but also still so flavourful and addicting.
the charred cabbage (also super spicy) paired well too — the salty chili crisp was my favourite part (especially added onto the dan dan noodles) as the light saltiness was a perfect contrast against the spiciness of the everything else. along with the heat, there was also a hint of sourness, a bit of sweetness from the cabbage, and a strong fragrance.

For how hyped up Sunnys is, I would say it managed to meet expectations.
The food was spot on. The portion sizes, while seemingly built for sharing, were still relatively generous.
The silver needle noodles were absolutely delicious. All the flavours of a classic ho fun but with a nice extra chew to it. I also thought their orange chicken had a great balance between sweetness and savouriness, as well as having a great crunch. The star of the show was the much hyped up HK French Toast, which definitely met, if not exceeded expectations. The oolong infused condensed milk was subtle but very much appreciated.
The ambience was lovely and service was very friendly and efficient. The food here is not incredibly innovative but rather well executed, somewhat elevated classics. I would easily recommend this spot for a nicer dining experience. The food may not blow you away with unique takes on dishes but the overall experience is well worth the visit.

Went to Sunnys for a colab they had with Hexagon - a Michelin starred restaurant from Oakville.
Both chefs collaborated on a tasting menu with cocktail pairing included and my experience was awesome.
Cocktails were creative and full of flavour. Food was very good and the dishes created by the chef of Sunnys were very creative and highly experimental. I believe he is constantly trying to improve and trying out new things and the result is most likely a combination of ingredients you’ve never eaten before.
The atmosphere in the back patio is super nice and has an awesome comforting restaurant feeling. Service was attentive and on point. Would recommend and definitely will return.

This restaurant has been on my list for such a long time and I finally got to go and try it for myself! The food was really good and delicious (no doubt about that)! The service was great as well. Staff were friendly, knowledgeable and recommended items on the menu that were best sellers. My friend and I were lost trying to find this place and one of the staff was so helpful that she was staying on the phone with us the entire time while giving us directions and was willing to go outside and come find us. Eventually, we found the place but it was such a nice touch to have! I am giving this place 4.5 stars. The only thing though is that the place gets too loud that it's hard to have a clear conversation (because the restaurant is pretty small). Other than that, I would come here again and highly recommend this place!
Finally made it out to Sunnys with a larger group of friends. Had a great time. The food was all very good although I wouldn't say there was any stand out must have dishes. It's all up to personal preference. Tried a lot of the dishes and everything was consistently good. The drinks and service were both amazing.
Everything was absolutely delicious, and topped off with excellent service. The vibe is very chill, even though it was loud, and the layout allows for patrons to see them working in the kitchen. My favourite was the Typhoon Shelter Squid , deep fried with the texture highlighted by the crunch of the chilli. There was so much flavour in everything, even the charred caraflex cabbage and chrysanthemum Spinach.
This was easily the best meal we had in Toronto. We did the pre-fix menu, which was SO much food. Even outside the wild number of dishes, the portions themselves were so generous.
The short ribs, dan dan noodles, spinach, orange chicken, all amazing. However, by far the highlight was the black sesame french toast. I'll be thinking about that dish for a long time, was one of the best desserts I've had.
The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the vibe of the restaurant was lovely. Sincerely hope to return soon!
We had high hopes for Sunnys Chinese since we really enjoyed Mimi’s and Linny’s, which are from the same team. Unfortunately, Sunnys was disappointing. The service was not friendly, and the food was mediocre at best. Some dishes were far too salty, while others didn’t stand out at all. Overall, it didn’t come close to the quality or experience of their other restaurants. I’d personally skip this one.
This was a second visit for one couple. È decided on tasting menu having it recommended by the server. The couple had the tasting menu last time and enjoyed it; one year ago. Well this place has changed for the worst. Portions are tiny. We left hungry. From waitress’s comments we are far from the only ones to comment on meal. The food was ok at best. 90$ for tasting menu is way overpriced. She called the manager over who asked if she can bring us another plate. We reminded her that we had just been served and ate our dessert. She basically said “ok then” and walked away.
